Academic Qualification Requirements

Applicants seeking admission to the PhD degree programme should possess:

  1. master’s degree from a recognized university or comparable institution; or
  2. bachelor’s degree with first class honours from a recognized university or comparable institution; or
  3. any other qualification deemed by the Graduate School to be acceptable for this purpose.

Candidates under paragraph (B) should have evidence of research achievement/ experience.

Candidates under paragraph (C) may be required to take a qualifying examination. Their progress shall be reported to the Graduate School at the end of their first year of study

Note: Admission of MPhil and part-time students in School of Business is currently ceased until further notice.

Language Proficiency Requirements

An applicant seeking admission on the basis of a qualification from a university or comparable institution of which the language of teaching and/or examination is not English is required to obtain a valid result in International English Language Testing System (IELTS) or in the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) with the minimum scores shown below. The TOEFL institution code of the University is 9467.

Students admitted with English test results lower than the threshold standards will have to complete the English enhancement course(s) before confirmation of candidature, or pass the threshold standard in IELTS/TOEFL before the oral examination.

Submit an initial application online via HKPFS Electronic System. A HKPFS Reference Number will be assigned.

Submit a full online application to HKBU through Graduate School’s online application system. For applications for admission via HKPFS track, please quote the HKPFS reference number obtained from RGC.

Documents Required for Admission Application

Applications should be submitted online via the online application system. Applicants are also required to submit the following supporting documents along with their application:

  1. HKID card (for local applicants) Passport or other identity documents of home country (for non-local applicants)
  2. Degree certificate(s)/graduation diploma(s), and transcript(s) (including the institution’s grading system) for academic qualification(s) supporting the application
  3. English proficiency test results (e.g. TOEFL/IELTS/CET6 results)
  4. Research proposal

  1. Other relevant test results, if applicable (e.g. GMAT, GRE)
  2. Certificate(s)/supporting document(s) of scholarship(s) and prize(s)
  3. Certificate(s) of professional qualification(s)
  4. Sample(s) of publication or research work/record of research experience/publication list

Confidential Recommendation
Form

All applicants are required to provide confidential references from two referees.

Upon duly completion of the Form, referees are requested to send it directly to the Graduate School within two weeks from the date the application is submitted or before the submission deadline. Referees can send back their recommendations to the Graduate School by post or email (hkbu_rpg@hkbu.edu.hk). If applicants want to submit the form on their behalf, they need to post to us the signed forms sealed by the referees.

Notes

  1. An acknowledgment email will be sent to the applicant once he/she has successfully submitted the application online. Upon successful submission of the application, applicants are not required to email or post any duplicate supporting document(s) to the University. If further document(s) is/are needed, the University will send a follow up email directly to the applicants.
  2. Non-local students refer to those entering Hong Kong for the purpose of education with a student visa/entry permit issued by the Immigration Department of Hong Kong.
  3. Upon receipt of the admission offer, applicants are required to arrange to send the official transcript(s) of the academic qualification(s) to the Graduate School directly by the awarding institution(s)/authorities. HKBU graduates/students are exempted from submitting the official transcript(s) for their previous/current studies in the University.
